UPPER FILLMORE STREET

In a Nutshell...
The Upper Fillmore is a tree lined commercial strip cutting through wealthy Pacific Heights. With picturesque charm it offers shoppers a wide selection of bookstores, bakeries, elegant interior design shops, antique and consignment boutiques. Most of all shoppers are attracted to the area's vintage clothing shops, fashion houses, and specialty boutiques. Some of the better known names include: Bebe, Betsey Johnson, Black Fleece, Mark Jacobs, Eileen Fisher and Heidi Says.
Fillmore Street's commercial district starts at the Japan Center on Geary Street and continues 10 blocks North to Jackson Street. The Upper Fillmore with its high-end shopping and dining, is on the northern most four blocks of this strip between California Street and Jackson Street. The other blocks are called the Lower Fillmore and have a very different character. They are best known for their jazz clubs, where all the big names of the golden age of jazz have played and the famous Fillmore Auditorium on the corner of Fillmore and Geary Streets, where Bill Graham promoted the San Francisco Sound in the mid-60's with groups like Lead Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company and The Grateful Dead.
Besides retail establishments, there are many intimate restaurants, fine cafes and coffee houses. These attract a lively evening crowd. Even so, the Upper Fillmore district always feels safe and polite.
Parking:
The Upper Fillmore's parking situation is often terrible. There is metered parking on the street, but it is heavily patrolled for expired meters, and is not conducive for leisured shopping and dining. There are not many parking garages in the area except for the Pacific Medical Center garage at 2100 Webster Street between Clay and Sacramento Streets. This will put you only one block off the nicest part of Upper Fillmore. There is also an excellent parking garage at the Japan Center on Fillmore and Geary Streets, but it is quite a hike up the hill from there to the better shops.
