TOP OF THE MARK
In a Nutshell...
If there is a restaurant that can be called legendary in San Francisco, this is it. First, there is the setting on the 19 floor of the Mark Hopkins Hotel perched atop Nob Hill on the site formerly occupied by railroad tycoon Mark Hopkins' mansion. From its dining floor one has sweeping views of the city and bay that is surpassed by none. And then, there is the legend. During WWII San Francisco was a major transit point for shipping service men off to the war in the Pacific. As a last act in their homeland before shipping out, it became something of a tradition for them to meet at the Top of the Mark and toast life and good luck, for in the morning their lives would be in the hands of fate. This was the last act in the US for many of those boys. The next day as their ships sailed out of the bay, many of their loved ones would be standing in the northwest corner of the restaurant, watching as their ships passed under the Golden Gate Bridge. This corner became known as "Weeper's Corner" for reasons I do not need to explain.
If one is managing his life well, there will be moments deserving of an epic view and an epic history for context. If that is your case, when in San Francisco visit the Top of the Mark and make your own toast.
